Student Support Services | Special Education

The Science Academy is dedicated to providing a positive and supportive learning environment, and offers many Academic Support services, such as peer-to-peer tutoring,  to help our students achieve success.

If a student is experiencing difficulty in a class that requires help beyond basic tutoring, parents are encouraged to contact the teacher as soon as they are aware. Communication and collaboration between student, parent, and teacher is a key part of achieving success. If, after conferencing with the teacher, the student is still struggling, please contact Ms. Hodali in the Counseling Office for additional assistance.

Special Education: Individualized Education Program (IEP)

Special education ensures that the unique learning needs of students with disabilities are met through additional services, supports, programs, specialized placements, or environments.

Students who are eligible to receive support and services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) are provided with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

Please refer to LAUSD’s brochure IEP and You for more information about the IEP process.

504 Accommodation Plans

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination/harassment on the basis of disability in any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. The law requires reasonable accommodations be provided to students with qualifying disabilities.

To meet the criteria for Section 504 protections, a child must:

  1. have a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities;
  2. have a record of such impairment;
  3. or be regarded as having such an impairment.

Please refer to LAUSD’s Section 504 Information Brochure for more information, including qualifications, definitions, and evaluation.
